Safety First!

There are a lot of nasties out there on the internet that can wreak havoc on your system. Here's a few tips to make sure that your computer is safe.

1. GET A PC TUNE-UP

You can't keep your computer safe if it's already been corrupted. Nerds to the Rescue's PC TUNE-UP is designed to clean your system of all the little troublemakers that can cause your computer to run slow, inefficiently, or not at all! Just like a tune-up you'd get for your car, our PC TUNE-UP will get your computer humming again! This service includes:

  • Removal of all viruses and spyware from your system
  • Running Diagnostics to check your system for hardware problems
  • Check that your PC is secure from unauthorized access
  • Delete temporary and trash files
  • Stop unnecessary programs from running at startup
  • Uninstall unnecessary programs and components
  • Check for and correct disk and directory errors
  • Ensure you have enough disk space for your future usage
  • Verify that your display settings are set correctly
  • Overall System evaluation

2. MAKE SURE YOUR COMPUTER HAS THE LATEST UPDATES.

Hackers and Virus authors are always coming up with new ways to attack computers. That's why it's important to keep your system up-to-date. You want to fix any vulnerabilities in your computer as soon as possible.

3. GET A FIREWALL.

A firewall is device that blocks your computer from the internet. You then "poke-holes" in the firewall to allow only specific programs (like your browser, email program, etc.) to use the internet. This prevents unauthorized users from attacking your computer from the internet to your computer. Without a firewall, home users are vulernable to identity thieves snooping around your hard drive looking for tax or financial information, or (more commonly) for someone to inject advertising directly into your computer (popups, mysterious icons on your desktop, changing your homepage, etc).. Nerds to the Rescue recommends that you log into the internet through a hardware firewall (a little hardware box that connects to your modem) which provides the 100% protection. IF YOU HAVE A HIGH-SPEED CONNECTION (DSL or cable), A HARDWARE FIREWALL IS MANDITORY FOR SECURITY!

4. AVOID GETTING VIRUSES.

The best protection from viruses is simply being smart on the internet. Most viruses that get on your system were put there by YOU!

5. DON'T USE INTERNET EXPLORER.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer is the most unsafe browser to use. It's been used by hackers to steal information from your computer, install viruses and do other dirty work. We HIGHLY recommend using a browser called FIREFOX. It is faster and more secure than Internet Explorer and 100% FREE!

6. REGULARILY CHECK FOR VIRUSES.

Be sure to run a anti-virus program on your system regularily. IF YOU HAVE NORTON OR MCAFEE, YOU ARE NOT PROTECTED! Norton and McAfee are terrible for 3 main reasons:

  • They cost $35-$60 a year
  • They are "bloatware". Every year Norton and McAfee come out with a new version and, in order to entice the old customers to upgrade, they add new "features". These features are usually not necessary and simply slow your computer down.
  • Viruses disable them. Norton and McAfee are the most popular anti-virus programs in the world. Virus-makers know this so once the virus enters your computer, the first thing it'll do is disable Norton and McAfee!
